Why Would You Buy Gold!!!??? (That’s A Rhetorical Question)

Why would you buy gold? A better question is: How much is gold worth? On Thursday, you might have said $5,318.40 a troy ounce. On Friday, you might have said $4,713.90 a troy ounce, an 11.37% DROP in price from Thursday to Friday. That was the largest one-day dollar decline in the price of gold since January 1980. By the way, silver prices declined 31% on Friday (their biggest decline since March 1980).

So, I ask again – how much is gold worth? It’s not $5,318.40 or $4,713.90 – those are gold’s prices. The answer is: I don’t know, you don’t know, no one knows! You cannot determine how much gold is worth. It all has to do with a concept known as intrinsic value. According to Investopedia, “Intrinsic Value is a measure of what an asset is worth that is arrived at by means of an objective calculation or complex financial model, rather than using the currently trading market price of that asset.” Such calculations and financial models often use cash flows in the calculations. But gold, silver, and other non-financial assets don’t have cash flows. Accordingly, you can’t calculate an intrinsic value, or “worth”, of the asset. And when you can’t calculate its worth, or intrinsic value, you don’t know if the price you’re are paying for the asset is too much (overvalued), too little (undervalued), or just right (a fair price). Without the ability to make this determination, you are just speculating on the purchase. Will it go up, down, or stay the same? You have no reasonable basis to make that judgement.

How has gold performed as an investment over time. According to Jeremy Siegel, a renowned economist and Professor Emeritus of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania: “Despite outpacing inflation, the yellow metal offers little additional returns. Whatever hedging property gold possesses, its long-term returns fall far behind stocks and will likely exert a considerable drag on the return of a long-term investor’s portfolio” [Siegel, Jeremy (2023). Stocks for the Long Run, 6th ed. P27]. Siegel has some very interesting charts and discussion on this topic in his book, Stocks for the Long Run.

Why did the price of gold increase to over $5,000 in recent weeks? According to the Wall Street Journal (1-22-26), there are five reasons: (1) debasement trade; (2) lower interest rates; (3) central-bank buying; (4) expensive stocks; and (5) momentum. Why did gold crash to $4,713.90 on Friday? According to the Wall Street Journal (1-31-26/2-1-26), it was due to the U.S. dollar posting a strong recovery in price after Trump confirmed Kevin Warsh as his pick to lead the Federal Reserve; and profit-taking by Wall Street traders. One analyst commented, according to the Wall Street Journal article: “The short answer is I have no idea. Nobody knows.” This last comment highlights the extremely tenuous nature of predicting, analyzing, and commenting on asset prices that are based on after-the-fact analysis and sheer speculation, not some objective measure like intrinsic value. What will gold close at today, or next week, or next year? The truthful answer: I have no idea! That’s why I’m investing in stocks and other assets where I can determine an intrinsic value.

A final question is this: should you buy gold? You have to make that determination for yourself. But, consider these two things: (1) you cannot determine an intrinsic value for gold to help judge whether the price of gold is undervalued, overvalued, or fairly priced; and (2) gold’s investment performance has lagged that of stocks over time.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD January 1, 2026

THE BLUE DOT

Some of you may have seen The Blue Dot before. As we begin the new year of 2026, I thought it appropriate to reflect on the idea behind The Blue Dot. So, what is The Blue Dot? It is Earth shown as a tiny blue dot in the cosmos.

The Blue Dot is a photograph taken by NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990 from billions of miles away. It is a humbling image that inspired Carl Sagan’s famous reflection on humanity’s place in the cosmos. Here are two links from NASA that show The Blue Dot (Earth) and several other planets; as well as some of Carl Sagan’s reflections on The Blue Dot.

Voyager 1’s Pale Blue Dot

Six Images from Voyager (Earth is the middle image in the top row)

Take a moment, if you would like, to reflect on The Blue Dot. Everyone will have a different perspective and different thoughts on it. But regardless of one’s perspective, I think it is a good idea just to reflect on the bigger picture from time to time – whatever that bigger picture means to you. In this case, the bigger picture is The Blue Dot. Happy New Year 2026!

Best,

Paul

HOW TO JOIN WALL STREET’S MOST EXCLUSIVE CLUB. (SPOILER ALERT – YOU ARE ALREADY A MEMBER!)

The Wall Street Journal ran an article a couple of weeks ago entitled, Inside the Stock Market for the Wealthy (It’s Invitation Only). This article implied that there is an exclusive class of investments that only certain, ultrawealthy investors have access to. But in reality, there are parts of this market that anyone can join. And there are other parts of this market that many more people could join if they just knew how. If you are reading this post in our newsletter, the Intrinsic Value Wealth Report Newsletter, you are already an active member of this “exclusive Wall Street club.” And by reading this newsletter, you are learning how to become a more active member of this exclusive club because that is a large part of what the Intrinsic Value Wealth Report Newsletter is all about – helping people build wealth through these and other investments.

The Wall Street Journal article suggested that there has become a two-tiered market for investments. According to the article: “One tier is a private club of sorts, where a privileged group can obtain shares of companies still in their early growth stages. Everyone else is left with older, slower-growing names [i.e., public companies that anyone can buy].” At the Intrinsic Value Wealth Report Newsletter, we specialize in the market for early-stage growth companies and other alternative investments that make up the “exclusive club of Wall Street.”

In my view, there is actually a four-tiered market for investments. And everyone has access to at least some of the tiers, even the more “exclusive” ones. The four tiers are as follows:

•  Crowdfunding Investments – Equity crowdfunding allows individuals to invest in early-stage companies or startups in exchange for equity (ownership shares) in the company. It provides an opportunity for both accredited and non-accredited investors to participate in funding businesses, especially those with high growth potential. Investors can participate through crowdfunding platforms like StartEngine, Republic, or Wefunder. In essence, pretty much anyone can invest in the crowdfunding market; but most people don’t even know that it exists.

•  Alternative Investments – According to Investopedia, “Alternative investment is a catch-all term that encompasses all investments except stocks; bonds; or cash (or a mutual fund or ETF that holds one of those three). Examples include derivatives, hedge funds, commodities, and private equity, but there are many more.” Most alternative investments are only available to institutions and wealthy investors. But if you are in this category – which generally means you are an “accredited investor” (annual income of $200,000, or $300,000 together with a spouse; and/or a net worth exceeding $1 million, excluding the value of your primary residence) – there are many attractive investment choices in the alternative investment space. See this brochure, ADISA Guide to Alternative Investments, to learn more about alternative investments.

•  Invite-Only Investments – The Wall Street Journal article stated that: “The ultrawealthy are able to buy and sell shares of the buzziest private companies via invite-only transactions long before they list their shares on public stock exchanges.” But if you are an active participant in the private markets, as we are at the Intrinsic Value Wealth Report Newsletter, you can sometimes get into these invite-only transactions. This is often done through the secondary market for private shares, as well as the general connections that we have in this invite-only market. For example, we are routinely shown shares in the most sought-after companies such as SpaceX (we were able to buy into SpaceX for ourselves and others a long time ago at a much lower valuations).

•  Public Stock Market – The public stock market is a marketplace where shares of publicly traded companies are bought and sold by investors. It allows companies to raise capital by issuing stock to the public through initial public offerings (IPOs) and provides a platform for investors to trade those shares. The market is typically made up of various stock exchanges, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ, where stocks of companies are listed and traded.

Conclusion

A SALUTE TO THE KIDS IN THE ROTARY SCHOLARS LAB IN TIJUANA

As I shared with you a few weeks ago at Thanksgiving, I teach a conversational English class on occasion at our “Scholars Lab” in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, along with my Oceanside Rotary Club, the Tijuana Rotary Club, and several other Rotary clubs in Tijuana and the United States.

I like sharing what our Rotary clubs are doing with this Scholars Lab project and the many other projects that we do as our way of giving back to our communities. For today though, I just want to share with you the extraordinary commitment of the kids and their families that spend their Saturday mornings at the lab so that the kids in the lab can learn English and other subjects (BTW, this is in addition to the regular school they attend during the week). Many of these kids and their families come from challenged environments such as very low-income situations, single parent households, etc. These are extraordinary kids, because not everyone on either side of the border would make and continue in such a commitment to further their own learning. I also want to commend the teachers and the Rotary sponsors that give of their time and support in so many ways to make the Scholars Lab happen.

At this time of Christmas, which is a time of joy, peace, generosity, and togetherness, I thank all of those – the kids, the teachers, and the sponsors – for giving so much so that kids can make a better life for themselves. Merry Christmas!

Rotary Scholars Lab, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico (12/20/25)
