Making sound business and investment decisions requires that business leaders and investors need to have an understanding of how the economy is doing. The same goes for economists making economic forecasts. These groups and others can benefit from a simple economic forecasting model. THANKSGIVING AND THE LESSONS OF POLITICAL ECONOMY

As we move on from the Thanksgiving holiday toward the end-of-the-year holidays, I want to share just one more lesson from Thanksgiving. The following article was forwarded to me by my good friend, Dr. Mark Skousen, who is the founder and producer of FreedomFest and who is known as “America’s Economist”.

This is the link to a 2004 article written by Alex Tabarrok of George Mason University entitled, A Thanksgiving Lesson. It tells the story of how the first Pilgrims suffered starvation in the first year after landing at Plymouth Rock due to their establishment of a communist society; and how they turned their situation around by ending corn collectivism.

I hope you like this article. It is an enduring reminder of why we should be thankful for the liberty and capitalism we enjoy today!

A THANKSGIVING MESSAGE FROM SOUTH OF THE BORDER

I teach a conversational English class on occasion in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, along with my Oceanside Rotary Club and several other Rotary clubs in Tijuana and the United States.

In the class I was teaching last Saturday, we had an impromptu discussion and celebration of Thanksgiving, which is actually a holiday that is not just celebrated in the United States, but in other countries as well.

ECONOMIC FORECASTERS PREDICT SLIGHTLY HIGHER GROWTH IN 2025 AND 2026 (Release Date: November 17, 2025)

The outlook for growth in the U.S. economy looks marginally better now than it did three months ago, according to 33 forecasters surveyed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. On an annual-average over annual-average basis, the forecasters expect real GDP to grow at an annual rate of 1.9 percent in 2025 and 1.8 percent in 2026. These annual projections are 0.2 percentage point higher than the estimates in the survey of three months ago. The growth projections for 2027 and 2028 of 2.1 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively, remain unchanged compared with those in the survey of three months ago.

The projections for the unemployment rate are nearly unchanged from those of the previous survey. Like the previous survey, the unemployment rate is projected to be an annual average of 4.2 percent in 2025 and 4.5 percent in 2026 before falling to 4.4 percent in 2027, and 4.3 percent in 2028.

On the employment front, the forecasters predict job gains in the current quarter at a rate of 30,800 per month. The employment projections for both the current quarter and the following three quarters show downward revisions from those in the survey of three months ago. The projections for the annual-average level of nonfarm payroll employment suggest job gains at a monthly rate of 125,100 in 2025 and 55,200 in 2026, down from the previous estimates of 132,800 in 2025 and 86,200 in 2026. (These annual-average projections are computed as the year-to-year change in the annual-average level of nonfarm payroll employment, converted to a monthly rate.

TRETHERA ANNOUNCES COMPLETION OF PHASE 1 TRE-515 DOSE -ESCALATION TRIAL

Trethera recently announced a significant milestone in its clinical program — the completion of the Phase 1 dose-escalation trial of its investigational therapy, TRE-515, a novel drug candidate with broad potential to treat cancers and autoimmune diseases including prostate cancer, ALS, lupus, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and more. TRE-515 has already received millions in NIH grant funding, Orphan Drug Designation for two rare diseases, and FDA Fast Track Designation for prostate cancer.

Highlights:

Safety: TRE-515 was well tolerated at all dose levels (up to 1,440 mg daily) with no dose-limiting toxicities.
Preliminary Clinical Activity: Early signals of disease control were observed in a subset of heavily pretreated patients with advanced solid tumors.
Target Engagement: Biomarker data confirmed on-target inhibition of deoxycytidine kinase (dCK), supporting TRE-515’s intended mechanism of action.

These findings support continued evaluation of TRE-515 across oncology and autoimmune indications.
